The public elected one new person to the Hickory Public Schools’ board of education out of the three seats that were up for election. Incumbent Charlotte Williams and newly-appointed Margaret Pope will remain on the board for another four years.
Ward 6 was the contested race, with four people filing for outgoing board Chairman Joab Cotton’s seat. Amy Monroe, the mother of three elementary-aged children, won the race handily, with 65 percent of the vote, garnering 255 votes. Rebecca Inglefield was her closest competitor, with 120 votes or 31 percent.
“I feel so happy,” said Monroe of her win. “I think the fact that I have a vested interest mattered (to voters).”
She said she went to several precincts Tuesday, and had supporters at others to greet and talk to voters and hand out fliers. She sent letters to people in her district, as well.
“I’m eager to start,” Monroe said. “I know I have a lot to do and learn, but I am eager to get my feet wet. I’m excited to be a part of this.”
Pope was elected to Ward 4, the seat she was appointed to on Sept. 12 after board member Vanessa Linebarger resigned. Pope said she decided to run after the seat became available. She received 152 votes. A write-in candidate received one vote.
Williams was elected to the at-large seat on the board. This will be her second term on the Hickory Public Schools’ board of education. She received 980 votes, or 95 percent. There were 56 votes for write-in candidates.
