A former student is banned from Lenoir-Rhyne University after police say another student is threatened by him.
Thomas Botkin, 21, is prohibited from stepping onto the university’s campus, said Sgt. Brett Porter with the Hickory Police Department.
Botkin attended Lenoir-Rhyne University from August 2008 through March 2011, said Maggie Greene, associate director of marketing for the school. She would not say under what circumstances he left the university.
“He is a former student who used to date a current student,” Porter said. “He was on campus last week and she felt threatened.”
He did not say why the current student felt threatened.
However on Thursday, Lenoir-Rhyne called Hickory police about a suspicious person on campus that they wanted to ban, Porter said. While officers were there, officials with the university told Botkin he was banned from Lenoir-Rhyne University, Porter said.
Botkin left LRU. Hickory police received a call at about 5 p.m. Thursday that Botkin returned to the campus, and he was arrested at 6:10 p.m. and charged with second-degree trespassing.
An email alert was sent out to all faculty, staff and students Friday morning that Botkin was banned from Lenoir-Rhyne University’s campus. His photo was included in the alert. If anyone spots him on school grounds, they’re asked to call campus security or Hickory police.
