Hickory's first snow of the season fell Sunday night. Though the snow did not stick on the city’s main streets, it caused numerous accidents in the outlying parts of the county and in Caldwell and Alexander Counties, according to the Highway Patrol communications center. Hickory’s streets were clear and no weather-related accidents had been reported by 7 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service called for a wintry mix with a low of 31 degrees. Little or no ice accumulation was expected and the snowfall could reach one to two inches by morning. Today’s high is predicted to reach 49 degrees and what little snow has accumulated is not expected to last long.
On Sunday night, none of the three school systems in Catawba County had made a decision on whether or not to cancel school today.
“Right now we’re just waiting and seeing,” said Catawba County Schools Superintendent Glenn Barger.
Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools and Newton-Conover Schools have similar methods to alert parents for school closures. Their primary method is an automated system called Alert Now that makes phone calls to each of the parents and faculty to let them know if school will be canceled or delayed. The schools also post the information on their websites and alert the local media of their decision.
Representatives of the three systems agreed that their likely decision will be to delay – not cancel – today’s school day.
Catawba County Schools will announce its decision by 5 a.m. Newton-Conover Schools will announce its decision by 5:30 a.m. and Hickory City Schools will decide by 6 a.m.
