What: Newton City Council meeting
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday
Where: Newton City Hall, 401 N. Main Ave., Newton
Council will:
- Decide on a budget amendment to use money from the general fund to build a road for fire protection purposes at the city landfill on Boston Road.
- Decide on whether to amend a special use permit. Wilce Martin, director of public works and utilities, has requested to remove a row of white pines that were planted in front of the water plant along NC 10 as a required buffer.
- Decide on whether to apply for a SAFER Grant, which would pay for some additional fire personnel. City staff is requesting nine more fire department employees. The grant would pay the salary and some overtime for two years at 100 percent. The city would not have to match the grant but would either have to pick up the salaries at the beginning of the third year or pay for unemployment benefits.
- Decide on whether to apply for grant/loan assistance for the Snow Creek Sewer Rehabilitation Project. The city would apply through the North Carolina Construction Grants and Loans Section of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, but the city would not be obligated to accept a grant if awarded. The first phase of a four-phase project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The cost of the other three phases is estimated at $1.069 million, with city officials hoping a grant can pay for the majority of the cost, according to information from the city.
