State Court of Appeals Judge Sam J. Ervin IV has filed with the State Board of Elections to seek the NC Supreme Court seat held by Justice Paul Newby, one of seven seats on the state’s highest court.
Ervin, a Morganton resident, was elected to the Court of Appeals in 2008. He came to the court from the North Carolina Utilities Commission where he served from 1999 through 2008.
“The law is the glue that holds society together. As a member of the Court of Appeals, I have applied it dispassionately, fairly, and conscientiously. I will do the same on the Supreme Court,” Ervin said.
Ervin was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1981 and practiced law in his hometown of Morganton from 1981 until 1999. In private practice, Ervin handled a wide range of civil, criminal and administrative matters, including many appeals to the Court of Appeals and the state Supreme Court.
Ervin attended the Burke County public schools and graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College in 1978. Ervin received his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1981.
He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Morganton, where he has served as a deacon and currently serves as an elder. He has been active in civic, charitable and bar-related activities and currently officiates youth, middle school and high school men's and women's soccer matches.
Ervin is married to Mary Temple Ervin and has two stepchildren and two children.
