Trooper was doing his job

This letter is in response to the letter that was sent in by David Killion. He states that he is new to the area and that he was given a speeding ticket by one of Catawba County’s very friendly Highway patrolman.

I, too, travel 321 on my way to wrk. There are several signs that inform you that the speed limit will change from 65 to 55 ahead.

If you read the signs, which all drivers are supposed to do, you will know that you are to begin slowing down. This trooper took an oath to uphold the law and to protect and serve citizens of North Carolina. He never knows when he makes a routine stop what the outcome will be. He was doing his job.

I agree with Killion, our troopers in Catawba County are friendly, and by the way, you also stated in your letter “Burke County here I come.” The Highway patrolmen in Catawba and Burke are all part of Troop F.

Thanks for your kindness

On Dec. 23, I was at the Sidewalk Cafe and Bakery in Conover. All the tables there were filled. The server took my order, and was very kind even though she was very busy.

Due to her kindness, I began to think of my husband, Tom, who deceased in September 2011, and I began crying. I could not stop. Once again, the server was very kind and said to just stay here, eat and enjoy the food.

My tears continued to flow, and I was a public spectacle. I did as she said, however, and finished my lunch. When I went to pay my bill, I could not find my check. At the cash register, the lady said “Your bill has been paid.”

I would publicly like to thank that person who remained anonymous to me for his/her act of kindness. So thanks to the server and the unknown benefactor for your acts of kindness. May God bless you.

Voter ID fraud benefits Democrats

I thought liberals and Democrats were all about “fairness.” (It’s funny how “spreading the wealth around” through income redistribution and punishing the rich simply because they are successful is fair. But that ‘s a topic for another day ).

Then why do they oppose and fear laws that require ID in order to vote?

They claim that Republicans want to suppress voter turn out. This is true. They want to suppress fraudulent voter turnout. But the Democrats claim there is no “significant” voter fraud going on. I guess they missed the news that there have been voter fraud convictions in 46 states from the last election cycle.

The fact is that the Democrat party is pretty much the exclusive beneficiary of voter fraud tactics. When you have the involvement of unions, such as the violent thug tactics of SEIU, voter intimidation tactics used by the New Black Panther party (that Eric Holder’s Justice Department refuses to prosecute despite the fact that the incident is on tape for all to see ) and criminal community agitator groups such as ACORN, it’s not at all surprising into which camp the fraudulent votes fall.

What does one need ID for? Cashing a check, boarding an airplane, buying alcohol, even some retailers require a photo ID if you simply want to use a valid credit card. But it’s somehow “unfair” to determine if voters are who they say they are?

The Democrats obviously think we’re so stupid that we can’t see the real reason they fear voter ID laws. They benefit 99 percent of the time from voter fraud, so they’re OK with it. Criminal and fraudulent voter activity is “fair” as long as it favors the Democrats.

Studies show CNN, NPR get it right

Buzzy Lowe blames the "progressive mainstream media" for giving the public misleading and inaccurate news. Mr. Lowe a "Fox News kinda guy," his self-description, must have missed three studies on accuracy in news.

In each of the studies the results were almost identical findings in that the most misconceptions, misinformation and most misleading information came from Fox News. In the study done by Programs on International Policy at the University of Maryland, it was found that only 20 percent of Fox viewers realized that WMD had not been found in Iraq after the war; whereas, 45 and 77 percent of CNN/NBC and NPR/PBS viewers respectively realized they had not been found.

The numbers were almost identical when asked about the false statement that there was evidence of links between Iraq and Al Queda leading up to the  war. This study also reported that the more viewers watched Fox the more confused and misinformed they were.

More recently in a Wall Street/NBC study 41 percent of MSNBC viewers had the misconception that health reform gave coverage to illegal immigrants, but 72 percent of Fox viewers harbored these confusions. In 2011 a Fairleigh Dickinson University study found that Fox News viewers know less than people who don't watch any news.

The studies showed that the most accurate information came from NPR and PBS, yet Republican lawmakers have tried to defund these organizations for years. Perhaps Mr. Lowe should listen to NPR and PBS because misinformation believed translates to representatives elected with misguided policies to the detriment of this nation.

Thanks for giving to the children

The Catawba Valley Marine Corps League, coordinators of the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, appreciates the response received from the citizens of Catawba and Alexcnder counties for the need for toys during the Christmas season.

Through your generosity, the Marine Corps League collected and helped provide toys for over 4,500 children through the Christmas Bureau, Cops for Tots and other organizations within Catawba and Alexander counties.

It is impossible to name the businesses, schools and individuals who responded to a worthy cause, but it is greatly appreciated.
