Emergency officials assessing damage in Burke

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Burke County emergency officials were conducting preliminary damage assessments Thursday morning in areas of George Hildebran and Icard hit by a possible tornado Wednesday night.

Most of the roads have been cleared, but access is still limited, Burke County Emergency Management Director Mark Pitts said.

He urged the public, “please, please do not come to this area.”

About 10 to 15 people remained at the emergency shelter set up at First Baptist Church of Icard, said Pitts.

A state of emergency has been issued in the area, and county officials are trying to “get some kind of declaration” through the North Carolina Emergency Management, Pitts said.

About 15 fire departments in the county and another three to four departments outside of the county responded to southeastern Burke, Pitts said. They conducted building searches and removed trees to gain access to areas.
