A dead body was found in a burning SUV in a wooded area alongside Reese Drive in Conover at about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Investigators are working to learn who the person is and how he or she died.
“Right now we’re going to treat it as a traffic accident – we don’t know what happened,” said Chief Steve Brewer of the Conover Police Department. “My inclination is to think he had a medical issue.”
A 911 call came in reporting a burning car in a wooded area. When firefighters arrived, the SUV was in flames. They used fire retardant foam to extinguish the flames in about 15 minutes.
Firefighters discovered the remains of a person in the driver’s seat. Brewer said the person’s gender was not immediately apparant. He added that his officers were working to identify the vehicle’s owner.
After they extinguished the flames, the firefighters used chainsaws to clear a path through the brush so a tow truck could use its cable to pull the SUV out of the woods.
Brewer said the vehicle would be brought back to the Conover Police Department where the medical examiner would begin his investigation.
