Investigators think that a car thief switched a fake set of keys for the real ones in order to steal a 2003 Mustang Cobra convertible.
Officers have examined the security camera footage and they’re asking area residents for help in solving the crime.
The incident began at about 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 when two black men walked into Cosmo Motors. They took interest in the Mustang and asked to look at it.
“They wanted to start the car, but they didn’t want to test drive it,” said Inv. Melissa Christie of the Hickory Police Department.
After they started the car, the salesman got out to open the hood.
“We believe the man took the key to the Cobra to come back later and steal the vehicle,” Christie said.
Video surveillance shows a black man wearing a white T-shirt pull up in a dark colored car and stop behind the dealership at about 2 a.m. He walks onto the Cosmo lot, stops about two feet from the car, uses what Christie believes to be a keyless entry remote, opens the door, gets in the car and drives away.
The black Cobra has a tan top and is worth an estimated $16,977.
Anyone with information about the theft or the identity of the thieves is asked to call Christie at 261-2626.
