Nearly three years after a Conover man was shot in the head and buried in a shallow grave in Burke County, Jonathan Scott Brown is scheduled to appear in court to answer for the murder.
Brown, 30, has been in jail and held without bond since he turned himself in to the Hickory Police Department on March 19, 2009. His surrender came the day after the remains of his roommate, Lee Hill Bryson, 32, were found and a murder warrant was issued for Brown.
No motive for the murder has ever been made public, but the details are expected to emerge as the proceedings get under way in Newton’s Superior Court beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Investigators learned that Bryson was missing when his family members reported his disappearance nine days before his remains were found. He was last seen alive in Hickory on March 4.
Hickory officers worked with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office to find Bryson’s body in a makeshift grave discovered in a wooded area in the South Mountain area.
Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said the murder occurred in southwest Hickory late March 4 or early March 5 then Bryson’s body was taken to Burke County and buried.
The property owner who owned the land where Bryson was found did not know he was buried there and cooperated with investigators when they asked to access the property, Adkins said.
Brown was 27 years old when the murder was committed.
