Deal of the Day

Welcome to Hickory Daily Record Newspapers in Education

Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a nationwide program whose purpose is to increase literacy of children by using the newspapers as a teaching tool. More than 700 newspapers in the US & Canada participate in the NIE program throughout the school year.

The Hickory Daily Record NIE program provides teachers with newspapers for their classroom each week, access to lesson plans in conjunction with the newspaper at no cost to the teachers or the students.

The Hickory Daily Record absorbs the cost of printing and distributing the newspapers for the program and relies on support from area businesses so educators may participate in the program at no cost.

Here are some free resources for you to use along with the Hickory Daily Record in your classrooms.

Starting Out

Here's a document that will give you a wealth of ideas to help start or improve your classroom use of our newspapers! Click to read it: North Carolina Newspaper Activities

Big news for little people! Newspaper program for Kindergarten-2nd grade - order your newspapers here. Scavenger Hunts

One fun way to use the Hickory Daily Record in your classroom is with newspaper scavenger hunts. Here are some samples you can download for free:

  • North Carolina Scavenger Hunt: Specific to our state
  • Concentrate on Comics: Think you can't learn from the funny pages? Think again!
  • Find it on the Front: Understanding how to read the front page is the key to becoming a good news reader. Make   sure your students know how!
  • Check out the e-edition: The e-Edition lets you navigate an exact replica of the printed newspaper to use with your students in class just as you would the newsprint version.

2007 NIE Week Teacher’s Guide: Now I Get It!
This guide provides a variety of lessons and activities to help students develop their comprehension skills. It also includes information about current comprehension skills research and national standards for reading comprehension. The material is appropriate for students in both middle school and high school. Special activities are included for elementary students. Download the guide here.

Homework Help

Now, HDR Newspapers in Education isn't going to do your homework for you. But we can certainly provide some help!

Are you writing a research paper? Entering the science fair? Looking for an online calculator for your math homework? We've collected some links to websites that can help.

One word of warning: Copying directly from a website and not telling your teacher where you got your information from is wrong. If you copy someone else's essay from Encyclopedia Britannica and pretend it's your own, that's called plagarizing and it will get you into lots of trouble. But if you take the facts and the information, then write it in a different way that's all your own, that's just fine.

Do you know some great homework websites we haven't included? Write to us and let us know at deggers@hickoryrecord.com

• RefDesk - refdesk.com: This site has all the reference links you'd ever need.

• HomeworkSpot - homeworkspot.com: This site is nice because it's broken down into elementary school, middle school and high school sections.

• WebMath - webmath.com: This site looks boring, but it will perform math problems for you, taking you step-by-step through the solution. It goes all the way up to calculus and trigonometry.

• National Geographic Homework Help - nationalgeographic.com/homework: Really good for maps, but the other sections are only helpful if you're interested in a few specific topics. But if you need help with ancient Egypt or the solar system, this is the site for you!

Just for Fun

Sometimes, you have to take a break from all that studying and goof around for a little while. Here are some websites with free games to play, puzzles to solve or crafts to make.

What are your favorite fun sites? Write to us and let us know at deggers@hickoryrecord.com

• Mazeworks - mazeworks.com/home.htm: Play games like Hare and Hounds, Hex-7 and the Tower of Hanoi, or learn how to build and solve your own mazes.

• Girls Go Tech - girlsgotech.org/games.html: Make your own mandala, compose digital music or write secret coded messages to your friends. This site was built by the Girl Scouts, but boys can enjoy it, too.

• FactMonster - factmonster.com: Cool quizes, games and polls, even math flashcards. We really like the Roman Numeral Challenge.
