Snowy weather has continued to delay starts or alter schedules for the traditional high school basketball holiday tournaments.
These changes were made Monday:
BURKE COUNTY INVITATIONAL: Opponents in two first-round games in the girls’ tournament were corrected, and details were ironed out about where games would be played.
The tournaments begin, as scheduled, on Tuesday. Admission is $6.
In the girls’ bracket, original pairings should have pitted McDowell against the Charlotte Catholic girls at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Freedom, and the Freedom girls against West Adelaide (Australia) at 7 p.m., Freedom head coach Amber Fox said.
The accumulated snow at East Burke High at first appeared to derail games being played there on Tuesday, and the plan was to play those games in the Freedom auxiliary gym.
But as the day progressed, Fox said, tournament officials were able to stick with the original game sites, so there will be four games on Tuesday and Wednesday at East Burke and four at Freedom on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All of the Burke County Invitational games on Thursday will be played at Freedom in the main gym.
PIONEER HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL: The weather in Boone moved the start back one day, with the first games now scheduled on Wednesday.
The tournament field includes girls’ and boys’ teams from Mountain Heritage, Watauga, West Caldwell and Nation Ford (S.C.).
HIBRITEN GIRLS GET NEW OPPONENT: The start of the Lady Hilltopper Classic at R-S Central High, an eight-team girls’ tournament that includes Hibriten, will be delayed one day.
The tournament is now scheduled Tuesday through Thursday and, because of travel considerations, Hibriten and R-S Central have switched first round opponents.
Hibriten girls’ head coach Monte Simmons said the Panthers will now face Asheville Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. R-S Central will play Crest at 6:30 p.m.
These changes were announced Sunday:
CATAWBA VALLEY CLASSIC: The girls’ and boys’ tournaments, originally slated to begin with games Monday at Hickory High (girls) and Catawba Valley Community College (boys), were moved to Tuesday.
The three-day tournament, in its 24th year, will include games on Wednesday at Hickory and CVCC.
Thursday's six games, including the championships, will be at CVCC.
Admission is $6 per night at each site or a tournament pass ($15) can be purchased at game sites on Tuesday.
