Through three scoreless possessions on Friday night, Patton High appeared as if it might be able to stop Hibriten’s rushing attack.
But while the host Panthers were held well below their 307-yard rushing average, a string of six straight possessions with touchdowns spanning parts of three quarters led Hibriten to a 42-0 victory in the opening round of the state 3A playoffs.
The victory pushed Hibriten (10-2, No. 2 West 3A seed) to a second round home game next Friday against third-seeded East Henderson (10-2), a 32-3 first round winner over Franklin.
Patton, which started 6-0, finished 6-6.
Fullback Tripp Patterson and running backs Kaylen Pearson and Trey Booker each scored twice in Hibriten’s extended outburst, while Patton had only one first down and 20 yards from scrimmage in the opening half with two turnovers.
Patterson’s 33-yard TD run opened the scoring late in the first quarter one play after Patton senior quarterback Trevor Buchanan was picked off by cornerback Jamaris Davenport.
Patton then punted for the third time in the opening quarter, and Hibriten put together an eight-play 69-yard drive capped by Pearson’s 7-yard scoring run.
Booker ran in the next TD from 19 yards, again one play after a Buchanan interception.
Pearson’s second score, followed by Hibriten quarterback Michael Isbell’s first and only passing (a 29-yard strike to Patterson) propelled the halftime score to 35-0.
Isbell threw for 154 yards on 6-of-12 passing, while backup Michael McCaleb added 29 yards on two completions. Buchanan, who entered the game averaging 152 all-purpose yards, had just 20 passing and 22 rushing.
Winfield Johnson finished with 58 of Patton’s 85 rushing yards, and Patterson had a game-high 112 on 11 carries with 52 receiving yards.
Hibriten gained 367 yards to Patton's 105.
