The St. Stephens High girls’ soccer team got goals from three players and defeated visiting Watauga 3-0 in a Northwestern 3A-4A match on Thursday night.
The Indians improved to 8-1-1 in conference play and are a game up on second place Hickory (7-2-1) and 1 1/2 games ahead of Watauga, in third at 7-3-1.
Hickory defeated South Caldwell 5-0 Thursday night.
The match may prove costly to the Indians, as senior Katie Johnson injured her knee and had to be transported to the hospital. Johnson and a Watauga player got tangled up inside when Johnson was trying to score.
St. Stephens scored in the fifth minute of the match on a goal by Johnson to lead 1-0.
The score remained the same until halftime.
“Watauga had some opportunities to score in the first half as we did, but neither of us could capitalize,” said St. Stephens head coach Chuck Davis. “A halftime, we kind of got them pumped up (his players) and came out in the second half and played really well.”
The Indians added a goal in the 61st minute by Alex Roarke for a 2-0 lead.
St. Stephens' Macy Franklin scored the final goal of the match in the 82nd minute.
“We came in only a half-game up and left with a game lead over Hickory and a game and a half over Watauga,” Davis said. “That’s what we set out to do, but I’m really concerned over the injury to Johnson, especially with it being her senior year.”
Sabrina Summers recorded two assists for the Indians and Taylor Logan added one.
Katie Mathis and Taylor Logan combined in goal for the shutout.
