Keith Loomis returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a score on Friday night, igniting Draughn High’s 42-28 victory over rival Patton in a season-opening game game at Patton.
Draughn scored 35 first-half points as the Wildcats’ collected TDs from four different players. Jordan Moore scored on an 11-yard run while Loomis tacked on an 8-yard quarterback keeper.
Also, Draughn junior running back Dustin Bryant scored on a 22-yard scamper while Alex McGee caught a 25-yard pass from Loomis.
Patton’s lone first-half TD was scored by Tyler Rector on a 49-yard reception from senior quarterback Tyler Conley.
The Panthers produced three scores – Tyler Bias’ 12-yard run, Tim Perkins’ 1-yard plunge and Conley’s 2-yard keeper – in the second half. Senior place-kicker Vince Thao booted two extra points.
ASHE COUNTY 41, WEST CALDWELL 6: At Ashe County, the Huskies rolled past the Warriors to open the season behind quarterback Sam Gammons.
Gammons completed eight of nine passes for 130 yards and three TDs and he also scored on a 4-yard run.
Ashe County led 41-0 at the half and the Warriors avoided a shutout when Jerron Curtis scored with no time on the clock.
West Caldwell, a four-game winner last year, had 154 rushing yards and threw for 35.
Ryan Corpening, the Warriors’ primary offensive threat, had two rushes for minus-3 yards.
