Saturday and Sunday’s games between the Hickory Crawdads and Lakewood BlueClaws in Lakewood, N.J. have been postponed due to Hurricane Irene.
The teams will attempt to play doubleheaders on Monday and Tuesday, both starting at 5:05 p.m.
The Crawdads return to L.P. Frans Stadium for their final regular season home series from Thursday thru Monday, Sept. 5 against Greenville.
Crawdads to honor Emergency Service Personnel
In honor of the 10th anniversary of Sept, 11, 2001, the Hickory Crawdads have announced the details for Emergency Service Personnel Night, which will be held during the Crawdads first home playoff game on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
All emergency service personnel, including members of the fire department, police department, rescue squad, and emergency medical services, along with their immediate families, can receive a free Grandstand Ticket to that playoff game.
Emergency service personnel can secure their free Grandstand Ticket by presenting their emergency service ID at the Crawdads ticket office.
The Crawdads post-season opponent has yet to be determined, but gates will open at 6 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Watauga 3, Newton-Conover 0
The Pioneers swept past the visiting Red Devils on Saturday by scores of 25-22,5-11 and 25-22 in a non-conference match.
Kristen Carter led Watauga with 32 assists and 11 digs, while Channing Hagaman recorded 12 kills and 11 digs.
CVCC plans “Team Day”
The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program invites area high school and club teams to “Team Day” on Sept. 3.
Admission will be free to all players and coaches and a Buccaneers souvenir will be given to the first 25 players to arrive.
There will also be games and competitions during game breaks and activities and informational sessions during intermission.
CVCC’s cheerleading coach is offering a free cheer clinic from 9-11 a.m. and the cheerleaders will perform during intermission of the first match.
The volleyball team will play Davidson Community College at 11 a.m., followed by a match between Davidson CC and Toccoa Falls.
CVCC will wrap up the day at 3 p.m. against Toccoa Falls.

Fred T. Foard to hold golf tourney fundraiser
The Fred T. Foard football program has planned a golf tournament fundraiser for Sept. 17 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.
It will be a four-man captain’s choice golf tournament with a shotgun start to raise funds for Fred T. Foard High football.
Following the tournament a meal will be provided along with door prizes.
Cost to participate is $60 per person or $240 per team, all proceeds will go to Fred T. Foard football.

Red Tornadoes run well during WNC Carnival
The Hickory High boys cross country team finished 19th out of 35 boys teams at the WNC Carnival cross country meet in Hendersonville on Saturday.
Zach Killian finished with a time of 18:29 to lead Hickory, while Josh Becker finished with a time of 19:05.
The Hickory girls finished 13th out of 30 teams with Jackie Lamoreaux (22:53) leading the way, as Amelia Gaither (23:57) and Jennifer Craft (24:18) also finished well.
LACROSSE
LRU will hold Fall Instructional Lacrosse League
Lenoir-Rhyne University will host its third annual Fall Instructional Lacrosse League. The instructional league will focus on the fundamentals of lacrosse including catching, passing, shooting, dodging and defense to help prepare players for the spring season.
The camp is open to boys and girls in grades two through 12 and will take place on the Lenoir-Rhyne lacrosse practice field.
The camp will be held every Sunday beginning on Sept. 25 and running through Oct. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Oct. 30 is designated as the make-up day in case of rain.
The cost is $25 per session or $100 for all five sessions.

St. Stephens boosters set up a meeting for parents
The St. Stephens High Athletic Boosters Club has scheduled a kickoff barbeque for all parents of Indians athletes on Monday.
The event begins at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria and free food is available courtesy of Shell’s BBQ.
A drawing for a $100 gas card will be held from among new members who join the club on Aug. 29.
