The Hickory Crawdads and Lakewood BlueClaws split a doubleheader on Tuesday in Lakewood, N.J. with Hickory taking the first game 4-3 and Lakewood grabbing the nightcap 3-2.
Both games literally went down to a final inning as the Crawdads got the win in the first game in the top of the eighth on a single by Jonathon Roof to score Christian Villanueva, who had singled to lead 3-2.
Francisco Mendoza came for a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning to get the Crawdads the win and earn his eighth save of the season. Nicholas Tepsch got the win.
Hickory had trailed 3-1 before rallying with two runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 3-all on Jurickson Profar’s two-run double.
In the nightcap, the Crawdads rallied again to tie the score. This time in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Roof to tie the score at 2-all.
Lakewood scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning when Bill Rice singled and later scored on a fielders choice.
Austin Wright got the win for Lakewood, striking out 10.
