James, Farley lead Indians to win over Bears

Jordan James and Kerigan Farley combined for 27 points leading St. Stephens to a 64-41 win over Bunker Hill in boys’ basketball at St. Stephens on Friday.

James finished with a game-high 15 points – including 10 in the second half and Farley added 12 as St. Stephens (3-2) posted its third straight win.

It was a balanced attack for the Indians as 10 players scored.

For the first 10 minutes, it looked like Bunker Hill (0-4) was going to play toe-to-toe with the Indians as the Bears held a 23-19 lead with 5:36 remaining in the first half.

That’s when the momentum shifted and the Indians took control of the game.

St. Stephens went on a 13-0 run to take a nine-point lead (32-23) when Starkey Drew scored with 1:15 remaining in the first half.

“The difference was we picked up our defensive intensity and we started getting loose ball and were able to get out and run which is when we are at our best,” said St. Stephens head coach Murphy Post.

The two teams traded baskets and the Indians took a nine-point advantage at halftime.

Over that run, the Bears were 0-for-4 from the floor and had four turnovers that the Indians converted into nine points.

While the Bears couldn’t find the basket, the Indians were 5-of-9 over that run and 6-of-10 from the floor in the final 5:36 of the half.

St. Stephens opened the second half with seven unanswered points to take a 41-25 lead with 5:45 remaining in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Starkey Logan and from that point the margin remained in double digits.

“They went on that run in the second quarter and we started forcing some things offensively,” said Bunker Hill head coach Matt Wilkinson. “We are very young and inexperienced but that’s no excuse in the way we played tonight. We have got to get better in terms of our execution and work on the things we need to do to be successful.”

On the night, St. Stephens shot 60 percent from the floor and 55 percent in the second half while the Bears were 36 percent on the night and 26 percent in the second half.

Taylor Simmons led Bunker Hill with 12 points.

St. Stephens scored the first six points of the game and never looked back en route to the win in the girls’ game.

St. Stephens hit five of its first six shots to take an 11-2 lead with three minutes remaining in the first quarter on a basket by Virginia McMahan.

The Indians led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 23-6 at halftime.

The Indians held Bunker Hill to no field goals in the first half as all six first-half points came on free throws.

The first field goal for Bunker Hill came with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter on a basket by Brooke Blevins.

The Bears did show some life in the second half outscoring the Indians 19-18 but the hole dug in the first half was too much to climb out of for the Bears.

Montana Lineberger led Bunker Hill with eight points and Keyona Hicks and Morgan Bibey led the Indians with nine apiece.
