Josh Baker of Valdese and Katie Gane of Hickory posted the top male and female finishes, respectively, Saturday in the sixth annual Charity Chase Half Marathon.
Baker, 30, completed the hilly, challenging 13.1-mile route through Hickory in one hour, 15.04 minutes to lead a field that included runners and walkers from 15 states, including South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Colorado and Nevada.
Gane, 21, navigated the course in 1:33.08.
Finish times for all participants are available in Sunday’s HDR Sports, at www.hickoryrecord.com and on www.charitychase.org.
Many runners and walkers also participated in the half marathon in previous years. This year’s course changed from last year’s but used the same roadways but in a different order.
“Runners and walkers were smiling and enjoying the race, and those not from Hickory were impressed with our community’s warmth and hospitality,” said Mandy Pitts, a Charity Chase committee member. “This is a wonderful opportunity to show off Hickory, as well as promote the importance of health and wellness in our city. The participants are already looking forward to next year’s race.”
Over the last five years, the Charity Chase Half Marathon has given more than $44,000 to community organizations, and this year the organization hopes to give about $15,000 to the local charities that served as volunteers throughout the course.
