Super Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. at Freedom High and Table Rock Middle School.
It’s a full day of scrimmages involving 24 girls’ basketball teams, five of them defending state champions, and is in its eighth year.
Teams will scrimmage in Freedom’s main gym or auxiliary gym and in the Table Rock gym.
Local schools participating are Freedom, South Caldwell, Newton-Conover and Hickory.
Admission is $5.
SOCCER
Columbus State 3, Lees-McRae 1
Columbus State gave up a goal in the first two minutes, then rallied to beat Lees-McRae in a women’s match in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Columbus State (16-4-2) will play Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday at 2 p.m. at LRU for a chance to advance deeper in the Southeast Regional, which is being played at two sites this weekend.
LRU and Columbus State met early in the season and the Bears won 1-0. The teams met last year in the second round of the NCAAs and the Bears won 1-0.
Lees-McRae had a 1-0 lead early when a ball ricocheted to Mary Beth Sullivan and she tapped it into the goal.
Over the final 88 minutes, Columbus State outshot Lees-McRae 28-4.
Columbus State tied it at 1 on a penalty kick by Stephanie Lowery.
The go-ahead goal came in the 67th minmute on a free kick by Lowery, and the margin stretched to two goals about 18 minutes later on a goal by Kiana Nicholson.
Mary Mancin made four saves in goal for Columbus State.
Hickory faces Asheville in third round of playoffs
Hickory High’s third round state 3A playoff match is Saturday at 6 p.m. in Asheville.
The Red Tornadoes (22-1-2) face Mountain Athletic 3A champion Asheville (24-1-1) for a berth in the state semifinals on Wednesday.
Marvin Ridge (21-2-2) and Charlotte Catholic (20-3) play Saturday in the opposite bracket in Charlotte.
If Hickory wins, it would travel to Catholic or be at home if Marvin Ridge advances.
VOLLEYBALL
Tusculum 3, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
Tusculum knocked the Bears out of the South Atlantic Conference tournament in Harrogate, Tenn., in four games.
After the Bears (17-15) won the second game 25-18, the Pioneers closed it out by adding 25-16 and 25-18 wins to their opening game win of 25-23.
Sam Underwood had 13 kills and Bailee Price and Kassie Voelker each had 11 for Tusculum, which advances to play top-seeded Wingate in the semifinals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
For LRU, Chelsea Hill led in kills with 11. Meredith Lutz had a team-high 19 assists and Kaitlyn Burton added 16 for the Bears. Three LRU players had 10 or more digs – Emily Cullter (18), Brooke Christenbury (10) and Burton (10).
FOOTBALL
LRU kicker again on academic all-district
Lenoir-Rhyne University kicker Colin Corpe has been named to the 2011 NCAA Division II Capital One/CoSIDA All-District II academic team.
Corpe, a senior from Ocala, Fla., is one the team for the third straight year and his name will go on the NCAA Division II Academic All-American list.
With 256 career points, Corpe last weekend became LRU’s all-time scoring leader for kickers. He’s fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Heading into Saturday’s game at Catawba, Corpe is tied with Jason Monday for most career field goals at LRU (44). He’s made 13 this season and needs one more to set a single-season record for the Bears.
