Lenoir-Rhyne men play home opener on Monday night

Bears will battle Mount Olive at 7 p.m. in Shuford Gym

Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men play their home basketball opener on Monday night against Mount Olive at 7 p.m.

The Bears (1-2) will be going for win No. 380 at LRU for head coach John Lentz, who is in his 26th season at his alma mater. He has 430 career victories as a head coach.

LRU won its first game of the season last time out, beating St. Andrews 79-63 on the road, after losses to Queens and Limestone in Gaffney, S.C., to start the season.

The LRU women (3-1) have three games this week Fairbanks, Alaska. They are going to the Mount McKinley Bank North Star Invitational.

On Thursday, the Bears play West Liberty. They’ll face Western State on Friday and Fairbanks on Saturday.

Johnston Community College 87, CVCC 80

Johnston Community College erased a 17-point lead at home to beat Catawba Valley Community College in a men’s game on Saturday night.

Johnston cut the Bucs’ lead to five at the half and won behind 31 points from Derrick Dunn.

Donald Johnson led CVCC with 27 points. Will White added 19.

CVCC dropped to 3-2 and will next play in a holiday tournament this week in Tallahasee, Fla.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., CVCC plays Tallahassee and the Bucs meet Jefferson David Community College (Ala.) on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Maiden QB among final 10 in voting for award

Maiden High senior quarterback Matt Johnson is one of 10 finalists for the top award given by the North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (STEP).

Online voting at www.TheSportsFlash.com continues for the group’s Football All-Star of the Year and continues through Nov. 20. The winner will be announced Nov. 21.

Other candidates for the award are: Larenz Bryant of Vance, Jordan Collins of Andrews, Seth Curtis of Murphy, David Herlocker of Charlotte Catholic, Tysean Holloway of Asheville, Justin Hughes of Mitchell County, Mike Sheehan of Wilmington Laney, Adam Smith of Davie County and David Washington of Southeast Raleigh.
