Maiden's search already under way

Blue Devils hope to begin interviews by no later than first week of February

Maiden High’s search for its next head football coach is already under way.

Maiden principal Dwayne Finger said Tuesday morning he is accepting applications from Tuesday through Jan. 13 and hopes to be interviewing candidates by the end of January or first week in February.

The Blue Devils’ position came open on Monday when Brian Brown -- who replaced his dad, Tom, in 2008 – resigned after four seasons.

Brown, 46, said he wanted to turn his attention to some personal goals. He will continue to teach physical education at Maiden but won’t coach any sports.

A Maiden graduate, Brown has coached for 25 years in Catawba County, spending four years at Fred T. Foard, eight years at Bandys and 13 years at his alma mater.

Maiden went 29-21 in Brown’s four seasons as head coach, reaching the state playoffs all four years.

His decision to not return for a fifth season leaves Finger, also a former Maiden football player, looking for the school’s fifth head football coach since the 1960s.

The Blue Devils will open the 2012 season without a member of the Brown family on their coaching staff for the first time since 1985, which was the late Kermit Whisnant’s final season as Maiden’s head coach.

Finger said he’ll accept any applications, regardless of teaching certification, because he Catawba County Schools officials want to find the best applicants.

Finger was unsure whether or not matching up the candidate’s teaching certification with the available teaching jobs at Maiden would become a factor.

Finger said he’s open to considering head coaches or assistant coaches and will primarily be looking for a coach who has had success in an established program.

“We’d like the kind of head coach, young or old, who has established a program. … some head coach who has been a successful coach,” Finger said.

The remaining assistant coaches on the Maiden staff range in years of experience from two to 25.

Former Blue Devils offensive lineman Butch Parker, who has head-coaching experience at West Lincoln, has been with the Blue Devils for 25 years.

Robbie Abernathy (defensive backs) has spent seven seasons at Maiden and defensive line coach Mike Elmore just completed his sixth season.

Defensive coordinator Doug McRee, who was in charge of many of the defenses during championship years at Bandys, has been at Maiden three years.

Former Bandys player Bill Vaughn just finished his second season at Maiden after a coaching stint at Bunker Hill, and the receivers coach (Tom Glissman) and head junior varsity coach (David Keller) have been at Maiden for two seasons.
