Draughn High made sure Bunker Hill did not have much of a celebration on homecoming night on Friday night, steamrolling the Bears 51-8.
The victory improved the Wildcats to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A, leaving them tied for first place with South Iredell.
Draughn travels to South Iredell on Friday night, fresh off a dominating game against the Bears (5-2, 2-1), who played without the league’s leading rusher, Reggie Davis for undisclosed reasons.
Bunker Hill head coach Travis Conner said Davis will also not play in next Friday’s game at Newton-Conover.
Draughn won behind senior quarterback Keith Loomis, who sparked the offense and also made key plays as a defensive back.
“They showed up and we didn’t,” said Conner. “We’ve just got to put these two behind us,” referring to a 49-2 home loss last Friday to South Iredell.
The Wildcats got a safety for their first points when Bunker Hill, forced to punt from its 1, snapped the ball out of the end zone.
On the ensuing possession, Loomis led a drive that ended with his 20-yard scramble for a TD.
After Bunker Hill’s Ryan Huffman lost a fumble, Draughn turned that into another score. Loomis hit Jaron Johnson with a 27-yard TD pass and Loomis ran for two points for a 17-0 lead.
On Draughn’s first possession of the second quarter, running back Jordan Moore broke out of a tackle and ran up the right sideline for a 9-yard TD.
Bunker Hill junior running back Justin Lynch, who didn’t have a first-quarter carry but ended up with 22 carries for 173 yards, helped the Bears drive deep in Draughn territory for the first time in the half. But Loomis picked off a pass by Oliver Rietzell in the end zone to end that threat.
Draughn started the second half with another fumble recovery, and on third-and-11, Loomis scrambled and found Alex McGee for a 25-yard score.
Another fumble recovery, plus two Bunker Hill penalties, led to the Wildcats’ next score, a 22-yard run by Dustin Bryant for a 37-0 lead with three minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter.
Draughn next mounted a seven-play, 55-yard drive that was capped off by Adam Estep bowling ahead for a short TD.
Bunker Hill scored by driving 80 yards on nine plays, highlighted by Lynch’s 44-yard run. Huffman scored from the 1 and Lynch added a two-point run.
