Maiden High’s 1-2 punch of quarterback Matt Johnson and running back Will Jenkins ran the Blue Devils past visiting East Burke on Friday night.
Johnson ran four times for 105 yards and three touchdowns and Jenkins added 117 yards on 17 carries and scored twice as Maiden steamrolled the Cavs 48-7 in a Catawba Valley Athletic 2A game.
Robbie McGee led East Burke (4-5, 2-3) with 125 yards rushing on 23 carries before leaving with an injury in the third quarter.
“It’s the same old, same old for us,” said Maiden head coach Brian Brown after the Blue Devils (5-4, 4-1) stayed tied for second in the league with Draughn by winning. “They keep making plays.
“It’s pretty much Matt and Will until someone takes it away.”
The Blue Devils’ offense was efficient and quick, scoring on seven of eight possessions.
Scoring drives of only three and four plays put Maiden up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. Johnson scored both TDs, on runs of 38 and 48 yards.
Maiden scored twice more before the Cavs got their only score.
The Blue Devils finished their third possession with a 1-yard TD run by Jenkins on the first play of the second quarter.
A fumble recovery by Maiden’s Dakota Painter led to Johnson’s third TD run, of 12 yards.
McGee scored on the Cavs’ next possession, finishing a 70-yard drive with a 7-yard TD run.
The Blue Devils got that score back on their next possession when Johnson connected with Austin Wright for a 31-yard TD pass.
“It was a weird week with the rain and we practiced in the gym a couple of times,” said Brown. “I wondered where we’d be mentally.
“But I thought we looked pretty fresh.”
The Blue Devils scored one time in each of the last two quarters.
In the third quarter, Jenkins scored on a 5-yard run. Grant Yowe scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter for Maiden.
