The Watauga High volleyball team defeated visiting St. Stephens 3-1 on Wednesday at Watauga.
The win gives the Pioneers an 11-1 record in the Northwestern 3A-4A and the outright conference championship for the second straight season after sharing the title the two seasons prior.
St. Stephens drops to 10-2 and will be the conference’s No. 1 3A representative in the state playoffs.
“Our girls looked great in the first game,” said St. Stephens head coach Denise Mullins. “At that point we felt like if they could keep playing that way, then we had it wrapped up. But their girls are tough and have a fantastic team and they just outplayed us the rest of the way.”
After the Indians won the first set 25-23, the Pioneers took three straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-19.
“Our seniors really wanted this match,” said Watauga head coach Kris Hagaman. “We really wore them out. It was a great way for us to close out our final regular season game.”
Hannah Stewart led the Pioneers with 18 kills, 10 digs and four aces, while Colby Combs had 15 kills, five blocks and nine digs, Skylar Hicks had 35 digs and Kristen Carter recorded 51 assists and 10 digs.
“We made some errors in the first match,” Hagaman said. “But after that we played up to our abilities and they just couldn’t match us.”
Hannah Cogswell, Nicole Hardy and Brianna Hall each had seven kills for the Indians. Taylor Cummins had 20 digs, Katelyn Houser had 16 assist and Abby Foster added 13 assists.
‘We’re very proud of our record and what we’ve done this season,” Mullins said. “Now we are just looking forward to the playoffs.”
Watauga topped the Indians 2-0 in the jayvee match.
