Draughn High got the win it needed on Friday night to set up a showdown game, beating West Caldwell 49-14.
Quarterback Keith Loomis scored the first three touchdowns and finished with 101 yard rushing on 10 carries to lead visiting Draughn to a Catawba Valley Athletic 2A victory.
The win sets up Draughn (8-2, 5-1) at home next Friday night against Maiden (6-4, 5-1), and they’ll play for no worse than second place in the league.
South Iredell (10-0, 6-0), which plays East Burke at South Iredell next Friday, clinched at least a share of the CVAC 2A title on Friday with a 22-15 win at Newton-Conover.
Loomis got the Wildcats started with a 52-yard scoring run in the first four minutes of the game. Draughn led 14-0 after Loomis tacked on a 1-yard TD run.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-0 with 11 minutes, 55 seconds left in the first half on Loomis’ 4-yard TD run, then Loomis hit Alex McGee for a 17-yard score and 28-0 advantage.
Dustin Bryant and Jordan Williams also ran for one TD each for Draughn and Alex Semande returned a fumble 22 yards for a score.
Tyler Dula gained 113 yards on 19 carries and Mekhi Dula added 17 for 101 yards for West Caldwell (0-10, 0-6), which must win next Friday at Newton-Conover to avoid the second winless season in school history.
Draughn can’t finish below third in the CVAC 2A regardless of its outcome against Maiden. In their previous two seasons of varsity football, the Wildcats finished seventh and tied for fourth in the CVAC 2A.
