Bandys High senior tailback Dominique Young rushed for 177 yards and four touchdowns on Senior Night at East Burke, leading the Trojans to a runaway 45-6 victory.
Young scored on a 45-yard run on the second play of a Catawba Valley Athletic 2A game, and the Trojans (7-3, 3-3) played with a lead the rest of the way.
“We were coming off two beatings,” said Bandys head coach Randy Lowman of losses to Maiden and South Iredell. “We needed to come win.”
The victory left Bandys in fourth place in the league, one game up on Bunker Hill and East Burke (4-6, 2-4).
While the Trojans rushed for 244 yards, their defense shut down the usually high-powered Cavaliers running attack. East Burke gained only 24 yards and 1,000-yard rusher Robbie McGee was limited to 14.
“The defense played outstanding,” said Lowman. “We stopped their running up the middle. We were worried about them keeping the ball all night.”
After Young’s early TD, the Bandys defense set up the next score. The Trojans held the Cavs deep in their own territory to force a short punt that gave Bandys possession at the East Burke 22.
Young, headed for his fifth straight 100-yard game, ran two times and scored from the 8.
Bandys forced two turnovers to get two more scores.
Brian Morgan recovered a fumble and Young finished a 40-yard drive with a 6-yard TD run, then Chris Botkins intercepted a pass and the Trojans scored on a 23-yard pass from David Barrow to Deandre Mack.
East Burke’s only TD came on the opening drive of the third quarter, when quarterback Matt Childers connected with Chuckie Ritchie for a 27-yard TD throw.
Later in the third quarter, Childers left the game later after a hit to the head. Eli Reese replaced Childers and completed eight passes for 93 yards.
Bandys scored three times in the third quarter – on Young’s 39-yard run, on a 57-yard fumble return by Hunter Lackey and on a 10-yard run by Devan Davis.
