Bandys High won its 10th straight junior varsity football game on Thursday night, beating Newton-Conover 38-18 at Gurley Stadium behind two scores each by Quiante Derr and Logan Hughes.
The victory gave Bandys a share of the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A lead with Bunker Hill and Maiden.
Derr, a freshman running back, ran for 106 yards and TDs on runs of 4 and 2 yards. Hughes, a sophomore running back, added 61 yards and had TD runs of 15 and 23 for the Trojans (5-0, 2-0 Catawba Valley Athletic 2A).
Bandys’ other TD came on a 64-yard pass from quarterback Logan Beagle to Brenton Jones.
The Trojans led 30-6 at the half after trailing 6-0 when the Red Devils’ Jordan McLain scored on a 78-yard run.
The other TDs for Newton-Conover, the defending CVAC 2A champion, came on a 70-yard run by Tyoan Shuford and a 50-yard run by Dylan Stanley.
Inside linebacker Lucas Baine led a Bandys defense that recovered three fumbles.
The Trojans, 17-2-1 in their last 20 games, went 8-1-1 last season by winning their final five games.
Hickory 58, Watauga 20
Jahiz Linebarger ran for 136 yards and two TDs and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score as the Red Tornadoes rolled to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory in Boone.
Hickory (5-0, 1-0) scored 30 points in a first quarter that included a 33-yard interception return by Nathan Surbaugh.
Cole Cumberlander added four carries for 108 yards, scoring on a 72-yard run for Hickory. Ben Ansley threw a TD pass to Tim Abernethy and Michael Tucker ran 14 yards for a TD for the Red Tornadoes, who had 408 yards of total offense.
Bunker Hill 20, South Iredell 12
The Bears (5-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten with a CVAC 2A road victory over the Vikings (0-4, 0-2).
Bunker Hill ran for 242 yards, led by freshman Cooper Wray’s 111 on 24 carries and 89 on 14 carries by sophomore Quad Lawrence.
South Iredell had an early 6-0 lead when the Bears tied it on a 16-yard scoring pass from Cameron Chapman to Cody Dobbins.
Jerry Redman’s 2-yard TD run in the third quarter put Bunker Hill up 12-6 and the Bears made it 20-6 in the fourth quarter on Wray’s 4-yard run and a two-point conversion run by Lawrence.
Kendall Lineberger had two interceptions for the Bears, who went 3-7 last season.
Draughn 14, East Burke 8
The Wildcats (3-1, 1-1) snapped a two-game losing streak by edging the Cavs (0-5, 0-2) in a CVAC 2A game in Icard.
A third-quarter 8-yard TD run by Dominique Patterson put the Wildcats up by six points.
Kwan Hall’s 8-yard run and a two-point conversion run by Patterson made it 8-0 in the first quarter, but the Cavs tied it in the second quarter on Larry Clark’s 6-yard run and Landon Ward’s two-point conversion pass to Elijah Reese.
Patterson had 79 rushing yards to lead Draughn, Donnie Patton added 67 and Hall had 50.
Clark’s 65 yards rushing led East Burke, which got two fumble recoveries from Dylan Hicks.
Travis Cook and Cole Huffman had interceptions for the Wildcats, who won four games last year.
Maiden 27, West Caldwell 6
Quarterback Jake McRee completed 12-of-14 passes for 157 yards and two scores as the Blue Devils (4-0-1, 2-0) won a CVAC 2A game at West Caldwell (2-3, 1-1).
McRee had one rushing TD and threw 47 yards to Kyle Kelly and 37 to Matthew Fowler for second-half scores.
Aaron Rudsill’s 1-yard TD run gave Maiden an early lead and Davon Jones ran 68 yards for the Warriors’ only TD.
Maiden led 12-6 at the half.
Alexander Central 48, Fred T. Foard 13
Darius Spratt and Tanner Starnes combined for 302 rushing yards, leading the Cougars (4-1, 2-0) to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory over the visiting Tigers (2-4, 1-1).
Spratt ran 10 times for 182 yards and rushed for two TDs and returned a punt 68 yards for a TD. Starnes had nine carries for 120 yards, including a 56-yard TD run, and threw for 28 yards and one TD.
Alexander Central outgained Foard 406-208.
The Tigers led 13-7 after Alex Leatherman returned a missed field goal 70 yards for a TD with 4:42 left in the first half, but the Cougars did the rest of the scoring.
Starnes’ 4-yard TD run and Sierra Walker’s PAT put Alexander Central up by one point, then Spratt’s punt return and a PAT by C.J. Gosnell made it 21-13 at the half.
Jackson Bass had 10 carries for 54 yards and threw for 53 yards and Nick Hudson ran 13 times for 50 yards for Foard.
Dustin Jones led the Cougars’ defense with eight tackles and Bub Parsons made seven.
South Caldwell 14, St. Stephens 12
The Spartans stopped the Indians on a two-point pass play in the fourth quarter and won a Northwestern 3A-4A game in Hudson.
South Caldwell (5-1, 1-1) went up 7-0 about four minutes before the half on a 1-yard TD run by Adam Watson and PAT by Nick Matthews.
The Indians (0-5, 0-2) ran a kickoff back for a score but didn’t convert a two-point conversion pass, leaving the Spartans ahead 7-6 at the half.
Watson scored on a 2-yard TD run and Matthews added the PAT with three minutes, 37 seconds left in the third quarter.
Watson ran for 52 yards on 15 carries and Spartans quarterback Gavin Reed had 81 yards of total offense.
Josh Reuscher’s five tackles and a fumble recovery led the South Caldwell defense.
