Lenoir-Rhyne University has a home conference basketball doubleheader on Saturday.
The Bears will play Brevard in South Atlantic Conference games, the women tipping off at 4 p.m. and the men starting at 6 p.m.
The LRU women are in a tie for third place with Tusculum and Lincoln Memorial after a home loss on Wednesday night to Wingate, and Brevard is 5-8, 0-5 with five straight losses and eight losses in nine games.
LRU head coach Todd Starkey needs one win to move to No. 1 on the school’s career win list for women’s basketball. He currently shares the record (114) with Pat Smith.
Brevard’s women are coached by former South Caldwell High star Shannon Reid.
The LRU men are fresh off a victory over Wingate on Wednesday night and they are 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the league, tied for fifth with Carson-Newman and Newberry.
The SAC men’s race is tight with the teams that are tied for fifth just one game back of Wingate and Tusculum. Lincoln Memorial and Anderson are unbeaten in league play and share the lead.
Brevard is 2-12, 1-4 after a loss to Catawba in its last game.
Brevard’s roster include two players from Lenoir – senior guard Ryson Felder (Hibriten) and senior guard Gaither Hendrix, who was at Wallace State before moving to play for Brevard.
HCA schedules games for Coaches vs. Cancer
Hickory Christian Academy’s Coaches versus Cancer basketball games are scheduled Jan. 27 against visiting Statesville Christian.
The games begin at 4:30 p.m. with junior varsity boys, followed by the varsity girls at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
Both schools are currently raising money, and that will continue through game night.
The games will feature pledges, half-court shootouts and a silent auction of items autographed by different people involved in college and pro sports.
The games are being played in honor of cancer survivors from the HCA staff,
Hickory Christian Academy athletic director and head boys’ basketball coach Gary Bowne, formerly head coach at St. Stephens High, is a member of the council for the National Coaches Vs. Cancer games.
Hibriten’s games with Watauga rescheduled
The Hibriten at Watauga varsity doubleheader scheduled Friday night was postponed by inclement weather in Boone.
The games have been rescheduled for Wednesday.
Former Bunker Hill star among leaders in assists
Kellie Rhoney, a former guard at Bunker Hill High now playing for Pfeiffer University, is ninth in the country in assists per game with 5.7 per game and she’s 20th in assist-turnover ratio (1.95).
Pfeiffer plays Limestone on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Misenheimer.

Crawdads’ Hot Stove set for Jan. 30 at Rock Barn
The Hickory Crawdads’ Hot Stove Banquet is scheduled Jan. 30 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.
The banquet begins with a social at 6:15 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m., and it will be highlighted by a discussion session featuring former Hickory pitching coach Dave Lundquist, former Crawdads Neil Ramirez (pitcher) and Josh Bonifay (infielder) and former third baseman Chris Mader.
There will also be previews of area college and high school teams and a silent auction.
Tickets are $25 and are available by calling the Crawdads at 322-3000. Group tables are available (eight seats) for $200. Tickets for this season’s games are also available by calling the Crawdads offices.
