The St. Stephens High boys soccer team will have a new head coach when the 2012 season begins in the fall.
Chris Nelson will be leaving at the end of the school’s first semester, which ends Friday. He has accepted a position as the County Athletic Director in Colleton County, S.C.
Nelson, 27, led the Indians to a 19-14-3 record in his two seasons as varsity head coach. He also served as an assistant to Chuck Davis for the girls team.
“I’ve had a fantastic experience at St. Stephens,” said Nelson, who is a a social studies teacher. “It was great to be able to come back and work at a high school where I was once a student at. The faculty and staff have been great and especially the other coaches and the parents. Soccer parents are a phenomenal group.”
Nelson will run all the athletic programs for the Colleton County Recreation Department when he begins his new position next week.
“The decision to leave on my part was being able to expand a little bit,” Nelson said. “It’s something I think I’ll enjoy and having the security of the position. With all the budget cuts and school positions being cut, you don’t know if come June if I would still have a contract here. So I just couldn’t overlook this opportunity.”
Nelson will oversee all the athletic programs that have been operating in Colleton County for over a year.
“I will be in charge of all the youth sports from football to basketball and then baseball and softball. Those are the sports with their highest participation,” said Nelson. “Unfortunately, they don’t have soccer because it’s run through a local club much like the Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association (CVYSA) running the program here. It looks to be an exciting opportunity and I look forward to it.”
Nelson came to St. Stephens in 2010 after serving as a non-faculty soccer assistant at Fred T. Foard.
